About the Congress

 

The 1st National Coconut Sap Sugar Industry Congress with a theme of"Coco Sap Sugar: Handog ay Kaunlaran at Kalusugan sa Pamayanan"ventured jointly by the Philippine Coconut Authority and the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agricultural Research held last 5-6 March 2012 at the Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City, Philippines.

 

RATIONALE

With the increasing domestic and export demand, the coconut sap sugar industry presents a promising business opportunity for the farmers and the small to medium enterprises. The increase in demand could be related to the high prevalence of diabetics and thegrowing interest of health enthusiasts locally and worldwide. In fact, the projected increase in share of sweetener consumption in the market for alternative sweeteners has reached US$1.1 billion.

The industry also serves as a job-generating enterprise which provides immediate source of income for rural communities. Moreover, the product can serve as a value-adding option for coconut-based agro-enterprise. Thus, in order to sustain the growing industry, efficient supply/value chain approach in business development should be in place. Likewise, Philippine National Standards (PNS) and certification for system of the product should be well-established to safeguard the industry.

 

OBJECTIVES

  • To develop a unified plan towards a sustainable coconut sap- based industry.
  • To implement product quality standards.
  • To promote the coconut sap-based products in the domestic and international market.
  • To foster cooperation among key players involved in the coconut sap sugar industry.

 

Expected Outputs:

  • Sustainable Coconut Sap-Based Industry Plan
  • A certification system that will safeguard the coconut sap sugar industry
  • Presented the final product standards for implementation
  • Enhanced market promotion of the coconut sap-based products
